All the sounds in the "The End" series come from supposedly silent final grooves of vinyl records. In this case they come from 12 different albums, all of which feature Pietr Ilitx Tchaikovsky's 1812 Ouverture, and all of which spin at 33 rpm. As in all other works of this series, you cannot be sure if what you are hearing really comes from the alleged records. You have to take my word for it. It is a matter of faith, or a question about whether it makes any difference.

The 1812 ouverture can be considered a fake. Written in 1880 to commemorate Russia's defense against Napoleon's 1812 failed invasion, it is scored for an orchestra augmented by a carillon and a cannon. Since cannons are rarely allowed in recording studios and concert halls, most interpretations of the Ouverture routinely simulate cannon shots by bass drums or sampled cannons. Probably some of the earliest instances of sampling are found in 1812s first recorded versions. The score also features fragments of French and Russian national anthems, both anachronistic since they are not those of 1812 but rather those of 1880. Thus, not much in this work is faithful to the historical truth, and its recorded versions are seldom faithful to the score. Anyway, Tchaikovsky himself said that the work was "very loud and noisy, but without artistic merit".

These tracks were used for the installation "1812: Instal·lació per al polvorí d'un castell" in Flix, august 3rd 2013.

The original notes for the instalation (in catalan) were:

I. Com a totes les peces de la sèrie File Under Toner: This Is The End, els sons que sentim provenen del darrer solc, suposadament silenciós, de discs de vinil i de gramòfon. En aquest cas, tots els sons provenen de discs que contenen la Obertura 1812 de Piotr Ilitx Txaikovski.

II. Aquesta obertura commemora la fallida invasió francesa de Rússia als temps de Napoleó Bonapart. La partitura inclou, entre altres efectes especials, 16 trets de canó real. 

III. Els canons de la 1812 han suposat sempre un repte tant a l'hora d'interpretar l'obra en una sala de concerts tradicional com a l'hora d'enregistrar-la en disc. Molt sovint s'han substituït per bombos d'orquesta, per diminuendos de tambor fortament accentuats, o per enregistraments extemporanis (samples) de canons.

IV. L'obertura 1812 inclou també fragments de melodies populars russes, així com dels himnes nacionals francès (la marsellesa) i rus. Tanmateix, els himnes emprats no són els de 1812 sinó els vigents quan es va estrenar l'obra (l'any 1882). La 1812 és, doncs, una obra "mentidera".

V. Encara que és la seva obra més coneguda, a Tchaikovski mai li va acabar d'agradar, i si no s'hagués tractat d'un encàrrec, és poc probable que hagués fet una peça així. Ell mateix la va qualificar de "molt sorollosa, però sense mèrit artístic".

VI. En les peces de la sèrie File Under Toner: This Is The End, l'oient no pot saber si realment els sons provenen dels discs que se li diu. En aquest cas, no podem saber si estem escoltant el solc silenciós de discs de Txaikovski o no. Però sí que podem reflexionar sobre si això suposa alguna diferència.
